  • Caleb crowned Victorian Barista Champion

    Caleb Podhaczky put in a polished performance to take out the title of Victorian Barista Championship. His win came as no surprise to the Five Senses team, who have long recognised Caleb’s talent. Caleb is Five Senses’ point man for roasting in Victoria. Runner up was Kris Wood, with Talor Browne taking out bronze.

  • New world of coffee in Sydney

    The weather wasn’t the only thing heating up in Sydney recently; the coffee scene was also warming up with baristas, café owners, roasters and coffee enthusiasts trekking out to the northern suburbs to take part in the NSW heats for the 2010 Barista and Cup Tasting championships. Coffee sacks and roasting equipment at Australian Independent Roasters provided the perfect background for the state competition and it was an exciting scene, with many new faces and nervous enthusiasm filling the warehouse space.

  • Record numbers at the WA Barista Championship

    This year’s WA Barista Championship was bustling, with record crowd numbers and a massive 16 baristas hoping to take home the trophy. But it was last year’s champion, Mark Chandler, our man on the street, who was crowned 2010 WA Barista Champion. Mark wooed the judges with a flawless and professional performance and some sweet looking coffees. Second place went to Jeremy Hulsdunk, who heads up training for Five Senses at the WA Barista Academy. Kaya McCarthy from Dimattina Coffee came in third.

    Some of the signature drinks we saw prepared at the 2010 Australian Barista Championship made us drool. It’s exciting to see creative new ways to enjoy espresso. In honour of the ABC, we thought we’d ask the Five Senses experts for a few recipes you can try at home. Jen, Jeremy, Mark and Caleb have all won their state barista championship in years past, and they’ve put their creations down on paper (so to speak) for your enjoyment. Let us know how you go!

    The Australian Barista Championship was streamed live to millions of people around the world and even included a few plugs from the New York Times as baristas from afar kept an eye on the Australian talent and competition. If you caught a glimpse of your favourite barista during the live stream or you were lucky enough to carry the excess baggage of a demanding barista over to Queensland, then you know what a competition barista in 2010 has to go through. The demands, the pressure of the crowd, the ticking of the clock.
