The French experience at Le Triskel

They serve their café au lait French style, in “le bol” (that’s a bowl, for us Aussies), all of the waiters are French, and yes, even the menu is in French. Story book ending: Ever After Café
After the first few conversations with mother and son team, Mary and Nick Roberts, I knew that their new café was going to be something special. Nick has worked as a barista around the traps in Melbourne and recently made the trek to sunny Cairns, keen for a sea change. Combining Nick’s coffee knowledge and Mary’s avid foodie bent, developed through hours of cooking show research, they opened Ever After Café Bookstore in the Cairns CBD.

Entering the land of milk and honey
While there’s plenty to love about Northbridge, from the cultural surrounds of PICA, The Blue Room, and the Art Gallery, to sumptuous dim sum and arthouse films at the Paradiso, one thing has always been missing. We mean somewhere to get a great coffee on the weekend, of course. Fortunately, that’s no longer the case, with the arrival of the swanky new café, milk and honey.

Stepping it up in Trinity Arcade
Tartine Café is nestled nicely in its very own little nook at the St George’s Terrace entrance to Trinity Arcade. Owner Niall obviously had a vision for his café, and has managed to create a warm and inviting atmosphere. The creative re-vamp just goes to show that good planning and experience can transform any space, however unprepossessing, into something very special.

Proud Mary rocks the streets of Collingwood
Roll back the clock to 2006 and Nolan Hirte was running a successful café and had won the WA Barista Championship. He had made a big impression at the national barista finals in Adelaide and any café he was involved with in Perth seemed assured of success. The logical thing would have been to open his own café and watch the money roll in.

Impressive izakaya at The Bonsai
Move over Spanish tapas, izakaya is the new way to go, and The Bonsai, recently opened in Northbridge, is the place to experience it. Small, share sized plates allow you to loose your tastebuds on a variety of dishes and the communal plate-sharing provides plenty of opportunity to dissect and discuss tastes and textures.

A beautiful piece of Melbourne’s history and architecture is currently undergoing a loving mix of restoration and renovation in preparation for its grand re-opening this century. A spacious section of the old Denton Mills Hat Factory, established in Abbotsford in 1888, is the newest site for Nathan, Sarah, Diamond and Ben’s cafe — Three Bags Full.

I rarely order coffee when I go out for dinner. I’ve become a little pretentious with my coffee. I was a bit of a snob before, but since my Five Senses days, I’m worse. So you can understand why there’s great excitement around the roastery when a top notch restaurant joins the Five Senses family. Steves Fine Wine & Food in Nedlands is one such restaurant, and on a cold and rainy Wednesday night, I enjoyed a night out on the Five Senses expense account. (Thanks boss!)

It’s a long drive to the roastery each morning for a few of us north-of-the-river-ites. There’s nothing better than breaking up the routine with a stop at one of our favourite cafes. On a particularly cold morning, we dropped in to The Grind on Hay Street to catch up with the girls and enjoy brekkie and a fantastic coffee.

The service is attentive, clean, efficient and unpretentious — exactly what you want on a Friday night when cooking seems too hard and a good unwind is in order. The food matches the ambience, Whirlwynd has a high quality bistro feel, with an uncomplicated menu using simple, fresh ingredients and a changing specials menu.
