About Five Senses

Five Senses began in 2000. Originally a roaster of premium Arabica beans sourced from small growers in the New Guinea highlands, Five Senses has outgrown its skin several times over. As the company began to grow, we discovered the unique and diverse needs of the specialty coffee market: the desire for distinction, the nuances of the roasting process and the coffee connoisseurs’ obsession to savour the finest coffee experience conceivable. It is a journey that has taken us across the globe and seen us initiate and cultivate relationships based on fairness, excellence and consistency. Our prime mission has never changed: to provide coffee, as it should be—unadulterated, pure and sublime.

Five Senses is a commercial roastery with roasting facilities in both Melbourne and Perth. Through these roasteries, we supply coffee all around Australia.

Green beans

Through our lab, we rigorously scrutinise our bean selection. We procure beans directly from brokers but also have relationships with growers. We purchase according to fresh crop and harvest cycles.

Direct trade projects

• Bali – currently working with two subak abian farmer groups in the Kintamani region. We own a wet mill in one of the subak abians. Currently all the varietals from these subak abians are being kept separate so that we can determine the qualities of each of the varietals and start to forge a particular direction.
PNG – continuing to work with Kongo Coffee, particularly with the growers located at the base of Mt Elimbari. We are focussing on post-harvesting techniques, particularly in relation to the picking of ripe cherries.
• Sumatra – currently working with a cooperative in an effort to build relationship with specific growers so that we are able to influence some of the post-harvest techniques.

Roasting

We roast fresh on our state-of-the-art drum roasting equipment and deliver every day. We custom blend. We profile roast coffees for the full breadth of brewing methods; ie filter, syphon, espresso.

Support

Five Senses believes in fully supporting its wholesale clients. We don’t prescribe to a set formula, but tailor a solution to the needs of the customer. We are focussed on helping our clients achieve the best results in the cup and work with them to ensure that they have the tools and expertise to reach this goal.

Training

In Western Australia, we operate the Western Australian Barista Academy [link], where we provide offsite training. Our custom support team comprise of the very best baristas. All of them being winners or finalists in both state and national barista, cupping and latte art competitions.

In Victoria, we offer training for our wholesale customers at either the roastery or onsite.

Service department

In WA, our service department comprises five technicians. In all other states, including Victoria, the best third party service agents are used, each of which has been specifically trained on how to repair and service Synessos. In Victoria, this is Coffee Machine Technologies and in NSW it’s Sydney Espresso Services. A comprehensive stock of parts for the Synesso is kept in both Victoria and WA. Our service department is also focussed on research and development and keeping up on how current equipment technologies impact on barista.
